Good news everyone.
Lav Diaz official website is up on wix.com
You can learn more about his work, art and philosophy as well as order copies of his work and donate to his future film productions.
That’s amazing news. Thanks for the heads-up, JP.
You’re welcome Arpursansar.
Does anyone know why Judicial Joe Mubicided, or where he went?
I’m going to trade eating for Century of Birthing, Florentina Hubaldo and End of History.
Here’s hoping I don’t die of starvation before they arrive, let alone before I ever find the time to watch them.
Can I get more info on this Lav Diaz? I just looked up some stuff on Google and it looks wonderful. The site doesn’t give out very much info, anyone know what movies of his they are selling?
I think he’s selling all his films. Or in the least, all the films he has rights to sell. I know Batang West Side has been a burden he’s had to carry for well over a decade now, which is a pity because it’s basically the greatest film ever made and no one can see it.
yeah, plus end of history is a main slate screening at nyff 2013 (his debut there) with a retrospective screening of hesus. is this going to be the year that lav diaz hits it big?
Thanks Nothing is Real, I have sent them an email asking them and when I clicked on the Paypal icon it automatically read $100, which is not a bad deal if they are selling about 5 films or more.
Ha, that’s absolutely great. Thx for the info.
There are festival screener-copies of Batang West Side circulating on the internet, but they really look a bit too bad.
This is some good news right here. Thanks for the tip, JP.
Yeah, thanks for the info.!
I’m guessing the hundred bucks is per film. Which is still underpriced for the work the man puts in.
I understand that getting his films on dvd (or in any form) has been a struggle and something people have longed for, so this a meaningful accomplishment. And what I’m about to say might sound “greedy” or ungrateful, but will the films be available for streaming? It would be great if mubi or hulu (or any site) could arrange something.
Looks like I was close, the $100 is for 4 films or 4 DVDs, Heremias Book 1, Melancholia, Florentina Hubaldo CTE and Siglo ng Pagluluwal.
Or maybe not, sorry guys, let me double check.
It seems like his films are even available on Blu-ray? Well, I guess his most recent three films are the ones that might be available. It is tough to catch screenings of his films, so being able to watch on Blu-ray would be great!
I’ve emailed him to enquire about Blu-ray anyway :)
Apperently the first batch will be DVDs only no BDs even though it says so on the page and the DVDs being released are the ones mentioned above. I’m just trying to figure out the prices.
This is incredible news.
Just received a reply on the pricing and format of the items, here it is:
The available DVDs are Ebolusyon, Melancholia, Heremias, Florentina Hubaldo, CTE and Siglo ng Pagluluwal. The ones in blu-ray are Florentina Hubaldo CTE and Century of Birthing. Each copy costs $100 each,blu-ray $150. If purchasing all the DVD copies per film (5 films), it costs $500. For the blu-rays, that’s $300 for the two films (Century of Birthing and Florentina Hubaldo, CTE).
You can check the site for the information about the films. That’s where you can choose the DVDs that you want.
… what I’m about to say might sound “greedy” or ungrateful, but will the films be available for streaming? It would be great if mubi or hulu (or any site) could arrange something.
I don’t see how it would be greedy or ungrateful, considering a bulk of us in the Western world probably don’t even know who he is let alone that he has films. It’d be beneficial to him to be able to show at least one or two of his works in this mode as a means of granting access to those who might want to see them but lack the means of $100 per disc (especially if it is something they’ve not seen before).
Thanks, JP! Wonderful news since I missed out the last time he was selling them.
Call me cynical, but i have a really hard time believing that this guy could make so many great films that are between 5-8 hours long. That is just a ridiculous amount of time. For a film to be that long and justify its length, it needs to be nothing short of a masterpiece in my view. and i seriously doubt that he has made 6-7 films on the level of Satantango.
Sorry, but i’m just very skeptical at this point.
I’m a little skeptical myself, but I want to believe otherwise. Are his shots choreographed and beautiful, or mostly long take documentary style? Does he just not like to edit the film down?
Tell me I’m wrong. Tell me his films are beautiful pieces of existential explorations of the human soul, filled with metaphor and symbolism, shots lit with beauty, stories that unfold in layers, parallel stories acting as allegory, all with compositions and camera work that rival the best cinematographers out there.
I’ve seen bits and pieces. He is very much a love or hate affair. A close friend of mine sat through two of his films at festivals and said that he brings nothing unique to the table other than his nationality. He is generally somebody i trust too.
I’m sure he is good, but at 5-8 hours a film on average, i expect far better than that. I expect to be blown out of my chair
“Does he just not like to edit the film down?”
I’m very much with Joks. I love a long film, but 8 hours is almost always unjustified, usually it is indulgent. This guy had better be good if it’s that long.
I tried to find some Lav Diaz films way back because apparently he used to tell people to torrent them. Well, I couldn’t find any torrents (not part of the right trackers, I guess) and seeing as I too am leery of 8 hour average running times and $100 dollar DVDs, not sure I will be seeing his films any time soon.
I guess he’s changed his policies about torrenting too, if he is charging that much.
I think he didn’t tell people to torrent them since ideally he would want spectators to watch them on the big screen, but he laughed about the fact that people were downloading his films and had no problem with it at all.
