Erotic cinema is you know, important too. Not talking porno, movies that explore sexuality and do it well.
There’s a certain power from intimacy in movies that do this well, sex is one of the most challenging things a director can film credibly.
You know, there’s two types of sex. Sleazy and romantic. A film may titilate the viewer and make em feel warm and cuddly, while another may be too realistic for comfort.

This list is pretty much complete, feel free to add scenes, thoughts, or anything about sexy movies.
“The Silence” and “Belle De Jour”. While it may not be so with these films. I find most movies to be more erotic the less they show and the more they insinuate, It leaves more room for the mind to wander and fantasize itself.
Baise Moi is unpleasant, that is for sure.
Nice thread :)
Catherine Breillat’s Romance was incredibly uncomfortable for me. I couldn’t make it all the way through, in fact. I didn’t find The Last Mistress erotic at all, by contrast.
I would add My Summer of Love and Secretary.
I’m pretty sure that Secretary and The Dreamers are the only “erotic” films I own. I like them both a lot.
I have only seen “Belle De Jour” from that list.
I’ve never seen it and have no idea what it is about, but i’ll throw it in for its title alone, “Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down”. This thread can take such an ugly path if someone mentions “Showgirls”. Oops, too late. Jennifer Beals does something to me in “Flasdance” however, that is until Chris Farley made me laugh.
UHHHHH, sheesh Alanedit pretty much covered it. Great job! Oh, but one of the most erotic scenes I have ever seen is from that film CLOSELY WATCHED TRAINS. The scene where they are making love in the train station and the clerk is ink stamping the girl’s body.
I would have to say Crash. I have to agree with uncomfortable/disturbing being Irreversible.
Caligula, Fellini Satyricon, The decameron, the dreamers, nine 91/2 weeks, unfaithful, basic instinct, inland empire.
My last girlfriend cheated on me. I can’t stomach Unfaithful. I prefer Diane Lane in The Outsiders when she was Cherry.
I saw Emmanuelle: The Joys of a Woman on a Cinemax free preview when I was in junior high. I would be lying if I said I didn’t remember it well. I never understood what they were doing in Hong Kong, though. That always puzzled me. I guess Emmanuelle’s husband worked there, but I don’t know what he did.
And adding to your list of Uncomfortable Sex is Savage Grace.
I have to agree with Nikhil about Savage Grace and lets not forget about Salo: 120 Days of Sodom.
Missy, “Fellini Satyricon” was very erotic and exceptionally disturbing. Great example!
Where would you put Shortbus in this? The opening sequence had me in utter disbelief, as did the portrayal of those orgies.
Update: just saw Shortbus under Graphic Sex. Sorry.
Salo? there’s nudity but sex? well I can see that too.
And what about Bigas Luna? “Las edades de Lulú”, “Jamón Jamón”, “Huevos de Oro” (Javier Bardem is the common factor). And from Almodovar, the scene when Victoria Abril is at the bathtub in “Átame”. Cecilia Roth in the argentinian film Martin (Hache).
Oh my! This is officially the first time I’ve ever heard anyone refer to ‘Crash’ as sexy. Don’t get me wrong, I love the movie, but isn’t it supposed to be un-sexy??
Secretary, the Dreamers,Crash, and ‘The Piano Teacher’ are some of my favorites already mentioned by many others. I’d like to add Wayne Wang’s "The Center of the World’, and ‘The Lover’, not the greatest movie, but plenty of eroticism. And back to ‘The Piano Teacher’, I find Issabelle Huppert pretty erotic in nearly everything I’ve seen her in. Even if it is to comic effect such as in ‘I ♡ Huckabees’ or one of my favorite films ever, Hal Hartley’s ‘Amateur’ where she plays a nun who has left her convent to go into the porn industry, only, her work is actually very well written erotic literature and not smut.
Definitely “The Dreamers”. It’s the most sensual film about youth, cinema and… Eva Green as the Venus de Milo.
TIE ME UP, TIE ME DOWN, WOMAN IN THE DUNES, THE LOVER, the Japanese thriller ONIBABA, THE DREAMERS, and THE SAILOR WHO FELL FROM GRACE WITH THE SEA – among many…
this seems an apropriate thread as any for this rather strange question, but somewhat aptly i was told last night that the jennifer connelly “finale” in requiem for a dream isnt simulated, does anyone know if thats true? i cant see it being so myself.
The most “erotic” films I have seen are the ones that tickle you the wrong way. Rape, torture etc. It should be hot, except for the rape, torture and gore. Cash in the forced fingering scene, it just made me feel weird, but it did make me think; not even about subjects related to the incident!
I saw Louis Malle’s Damage last night (Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche).
Definitely up there on my list.
Bill H, center of the world and the lover are on the list.
Alanedt, have you seen the Tsui Hark film Green Snake? It would appear in my top ten erotic films list. Id also include The Dreamers and Sex and Lucia without thinking too deeply about it.
I cant see that being the case either Adam. Connelly has been careful not to do nudity in almost all of her films, and her career has been composed of sober roles for the most part recently.
Don’t Look Now!!!! It was then (1973) and it still is …
can i say sexually disturbing? SALO then. Most pleasingly seductive is THE DREAMERS
