MUBI user Danny Bailey started a thread concerning which Oscar “best pictures” did not deserve to win.. which brings us to the 1950 Oscars. I have heard many times that Sunset Boulevard should have won over All About Eve for best picture (the great Born Yesterday was also nominated, but had no chance against those two heavy weights…) So I thought we could settle this. This probably should not be a 1950 poll ( a great year for films), but more an A or B poll. Also- this is not a Best Director Poll. This is 1/100th as interesting as Polaris’s recent poll, but for people with “movie voting” withdrawal, here is your temporary feeble fix.
please vote All About Eve or Sunset Boulevard (and then add you vote to the tally).
I vote: All about Eve
sunset blvd for me too. altho i love eve as well, sunset is just iconic. plus it has von stroheim and keaton. even cecil b demille! hard to beat that
Tally So Far:
I hope this poll just doesn’t prove how wrong I am!
All About Eve :-)
I don’t think you’re going to find many cinephiles that don’t prefer Sunset Boulevard to All About Eve, but unlike a number of Best Picture winners of the 50’s (The Greatest Show on Earth, Around the World in 80 Days), Eve win is no travesty as has many fine qualities of its own. But its it’s up against top quality Wilder here.
@Brad S. – I think Wilder is a great great director. I just think that the character of Eve is so interesting and the performance of Bette Davis’s is one of the best of classic Hollywood. My vote for Eve is by a hair. My prediction is Sunset will win- but I should stress that the vote should not be Billy Wilder’s body of work, but just for Sunset ( or Eve …
I’m not crazy about most of Holden’s scenes with Nancy Olson, but the movie is so good that doesn’t matter.
Agreed 2+2. If it was Some Like it Hot vs. Eve, I’d vote for Eve.
ALL ABOUT EVE . not close
Love both. But I will choose Sunset Boulevard.
ALL ABOUT EVE way not close…
A quick troll for the road: – Blvd. (and Wilder in general) is/are beyond overrated.
How sad is it that I haven’t seen either of these films.
But my sense is that All About Eve is the more beloved film. Hasn’t this film been the one serious competitor to Citizen Kane in various polls and surveys? It seems like I’ve heard several organizations list All About Eve as the best of all time (let alone best of 1950). As for Sunset Blvd, it’s not even considered Wilder’s best (is it?).
Again though, I’m pissing in the wind here since I haven’t seen either film.
PISSING IN WIND 1
Love both of them but I think “Sunset Boulevard” is better.
A girl double feature on what people will do for game, I go with
All About Eve 1
Sunset Boulevard 0
But the two are just Hollywood greats
All About Eve: 5
Sunset Boulevard: 7
Is this even a contest? SUNSET by a mile.
Autocorrect is stupid
Sunset Boulevard wins this contest, no question!
Sunset Boulevard is definitely the superior film…I vote for Sunset.
fwiw i don’t think eve was an undeserving winner and i’d take it over almost anything else
and yes, santino, it is indeed sad. i’m kinda shocked they don’t show sunset blvd in film school? but i suppose they can’t show everything. see it, see it now, see it faster
one of the greatest opening scenes in all of cinema, shot from the bottom of the pool
I’m with Sunset
I vote Eve
