It’s been more than 10 years since our last appointment at Calvin’s Barbershop. Calvin and his longtime crew are still there, but the shop has undergone some major changes. Most noticeably, our once male-dominated sanctuary is now co-ed.

While it’s commendable for a feature film to take on [important] issues – refuting the ludicrous ‘All Lives Matter’ assertion that inner-city blacks don’t care about black-on-black crime – its proposed solutions are about as weak as its commentaries on ‘Instagram hoes’ and the use of the word ‘fleek’… Aside from juggling two extremely different tones, [The Next Cut’s] failure to engage seriously with gun violence or to be truly funny stems from its sizeable cast.

Today there’s no place, either in real life or on social media, where you can talk about anything under the sun and not get yourself into trouble. That’s what makes Barbershop: The Next Cut so freeing, and such a pleasure. The pacing is noodly and the plot mechanics sometimes creak. But like the [Barbershop] movies that preceded it… The Next Cut is less about plot than about communication and conversation, offering a sense of promise that the air can be cleared if we just talk to each other.
