Both [The Miseducation of Cameron Post and Boy Erased] are worth your time; both, in their way, are intelligent message movies that refuse to hide their outrage at a repressive practice that, as a coda before the Boy Erased end credits informs, 36 American states still allow.

Already ideologically loaded, the film’s premise is also deceptive. But you can spot its real agenda in the constant, unconvincing effort to score points against religious thought, the institutional church, and traditional family structure.

This is admirable, but what’s missing is a sense of the texture and complication of the Eamons family’s life. Their personalities are too neatly diagramed, their conflicts too emphatically articulated, for “Boy Erased,” moving though it is, to feel like more than a summary of its own noble intentions.

İnsanlar ne diyor?

  • Daniel Roque's rating of the film Boy Erased

Having a couple of Oscar-winner parents and a bunch of queer stars in the background is not enough to bring a painful subject to the spotlight if you treat it this softly and polite. Maybe Garrard Conley's experience was like sunday school of conversion therapy, or maybe we can blame in on #straightwashing.

  • Lynch/Fellini's rating of the film Boy Erased

Conversion Therapy is one of the great, unspoken travesties happening in America today and needs to be exposed as the evil that it is... too bad this movie is terrible and depicts it on a very surface level solely for Oscarbatory reasons....

  • Jye Sherwell's rating of the film Boy Erased

Abusive conversion program? Yes. Oof. Characters who are put off God because of imperfect people? Another oof. If you look to people or religion to solve your big problems, you won't have the success that you'd find if you seek God directly. Tired of hearing about religion. Religion is flawed; God is love. God is what every single person on the planet can benefit from.

  • anarresti's rating of the film Boy Erased

Like Moonlight, it's built on subtlety. Which can be a useful tool when you want adversaries to listen.

  • Mr.Rager's rating of the film Boy Erased

In his 2nd directorial effort, J.Edgerton tackled a sensitive subj. which require some sort of comprehension, no kind of judgment or hatred. 'til now i even haven't know about the "gay conversion" practice and i was kinda surprise and upset to learn about this. Using God to do this is wrong. God loves all his children it's somehow forgotten but i paraphrase a book written 3,500 hundred years ago. 7.5/10. Same love.

  • João R.'s rating of the film Boy Erased

I don't intend to punish the movie for what it could've/should've been. However, this fails to depict the (psychological, physical, spiritual, etc.) trauma that these reconversion programs (must) force onto its victims. And I'm not implying that I'd rather watch an exploitation of that pain; but it needed to be more real and raw, as this seemed too smooth for the subject. Weak storytelling with strong performances.

  • bryanvmh's rating of the film Boy Erased

This is what happens when straight men feel like they can tell gay stories: everything gets weaved into the tragedy and pain of not fulfilling hetero expectations, the sexual content is confined to rape, and love is generated in spite of identity rather than because of it. Even (and especially) a loving caress is at best bittersweet. Still, Kidman, Crowe, and Hedges give good performances and this provoked feelings.

  • Cody Hoskins's rating of the film Boy Erased

It's a tough and moving insight into the life of gay persecution and pressure under a self-hating God-fearing zealotry that all the actors delve into with pain-staking heart, even though it's very troubling how the experience of being gay is hardly shown in any positive intimate light outside of the oppressive conversion therapy space and the depiction of a brutal male rape.
