Watching del Toro's trilogy all together in a compressed sitting for the first time, however, it was Cronos that proved most captivating... It lacks the polish of later del Toro works, and it's all the more lively and moving for its rawness—for the way its shoestring surreal-ness corresponds loosely and tellingly with the protagonists' desires.

Despite its clumsy plot development, Cronos represents a filmmaker joyously conducting a symphony of tones interlocking with cinematic details, dissecting core thematic obsessions with through the use of everyday elements.

A melancholy modern-day spin on classic horror themes, Cronos (1993) was the then twenty-eight-year-old Mexican writer-director's feature film debut, and it marked the arrival of a startlingly distinctive voice. Cronos was fresh without being trendy, exquisitely designed without losing sight of the fact that even the coolest creature can't compensate for thinly conceived characters or a tediously formulaic narrative.

This highly personal take on the themes of immortality and vampirism, a first feature (1992) by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, may not be your cup of tea, but you have to admire the style, sincerity, and overall sense of craft even if you don't fancy the comic-book gore.
