Donbass

Yönetmen Sergei Loznitsa
Almanya, Ukrayna, 2018
Drama

Özet

When war is called peace, when propaganda is uttered as truth, when hatred is declared to be love, then life itself begins to resemble death. In the Donbass, a region of Eastern Ukraine, a hybrid war takes place, involving an open armed conflict alongside mass scale robberies perpetrated by gangs.

Donbass is the film in which Loznitsa’s work as both fiction and documentary filmmaker come into closest harmony.

With such contrasts, the filmmaker sustains a balance between satirical clout and genuine disgust.

In perhaps the most harrowing scene of all, unbearable in its gradual mood shift and escalation, a man is tied to a pole with a sign announcing him to passersby as a pro-Ukrainian mercenary killer. Its intricate weave of interaction is a lesson not only in how mobs function, but how traumatic experiences and attitudes passed down through generations move virally and boil up again with little need of prodding.

İnsanlar ne diyor?

  • tidal waif's rating of the film Donbass

3,7 ICA screening. Contrary to his early contemplativity, here Loznitsa cuts audience off from the possibility of distracted viewing and expands their sensorium by an assembly of anecdotic abjection. To quote a friend, the film 'captures the grimy heart of colonialism everywhere', and the internecine rivalry between abusers past and present is strikingly fleshed out in this chronicle of a nascent territorial entity.

  • Jason's rating of the film Donbass

Though I have not read it, I am aware of the philosopher Harry G. Frankfurt's book ON BULLSHIT, and at times thought of that title as I watched DONBASS, itself something of a cinematic ON BULLSHIT portmanteau for post-truth times. The film strikes me as an improvement upon the very strong A GENTLE WOMAN due in large part to its variety, and no film I have seen recently has so outrageously magnificent a final third.

  • reiter's rating of the film Donbass

Great film about one of the versions of the truth behind youtube videos that has transformed random documentation into memorable art. I was fascinated by the 'cold mind' of Loznitsa telling us this story.

  • Iryna Kovalchuk's rating of the film Donbass

Genius directing. Exaggeration of Loznitsa has a new breath here after "A Gentle Creature", but I didn't really like how he has shown those people making them small in front of the director. Because of the fact that it was made based on docu and youtube videos from Donbass, I cannot say it is a fear vision on the situation on the East of Ukraine

  • Jacques de Villiers's rating of the film Donbass

Imagine Roy Andersson collaborated with Roberto Rossellini, the two directing 13 segments about Russia's ongoing occupation of the Donbass region in Ukraine. The result is as hilarious and terrifying as you might expect. With deliberate pacing & sociological sweep, Loznitsa allows brutal absurdity to unfold as the natural byproduct of bureaucratic reality. A tad long, although the final scene brings it all together.

  • Pál's rating of the film Donbass

A poignant sequence of documentarist scenes. No dramatization is required. You never know how easy it's going to be to pass a checkpoint. Believers of Novorossiya shouting Fascist at everybody that's not them. The climax of the film is terrifying.

  • lbunuel's rating of the film Donbass

As Loznitsa's fiction evolves, he goes past the "Tarkovsky syndrome" and develops a path of his own. The main structural reference here is The Phantom of Liberty, and to apply this device to contemporary Ukraine is a brilliant idea. Some of the skits are wonderful, some are not; and although I admire the meta-comment on the last one, I think the film simply didn't need a grandiose ending.

The most amazing wedding since Kusturica
