The gradual, matter-of-fact way that Côté transforms Ghost Town Anthology into an actual ghost story is quite impressive.

Injecting this dose of the supernatural into an otherwise kitchen-sink-realist milieu is adroitly managed by Côté, whose instinct for laconic humour is unparalleled, and while the allegorical implications of this tranquil zombie apocalypse for the economic survival of moribund rural settlements are overt, Côté is wise enough not to belabour his point.

The result is a genuinely intriguing and for the most part rewarding study of the effects of an unexpected death on a small, remote, inward-looking rural community.

An intimate, unsettling work that approaches narrative elliptically: Mysteries remain mysteries, and the value isn’t in finding answers but in emotionally exploring where the questions take you.
