[Ghostbusters grows] less amusing in its second hour… Mostly, however, the remake chugs along pleasantly, albeit with a few barbed digs at occasional sexism (“Ain’t no bitches gonna hunt no ghosts!” scoffs an all-too-plausible online comment when the girls post a video). And of course there’s Kate McKinnon.

It’s an unfortunate movie for an extraordinary group of actors—which is why it’s important to distinguish the experience of watching the new “Ghostbusters,” which is difficult to celebrate, from the essential fact of its existence, which is a cause for celebration. That’s why, as a critic, I’m in conflict with myself—I want there to be more movies that resemble “Ghostbusters” in its casting and in its revision of exhausted and unchallenged tropes, but not in its bland and constrained artistry.

The result is a handcrafted Etsy satchel bomb, lobbed at the same white-guy pandering popular culture that produced the original 32 years ago. Paul Feig’s woman-driven remake of the 1984 film is one of the more sneakily political movies released by a major studio this year, all the more so because it carries itself with such a poker-faced, “I’m only a movie—relax, bros!” vibe (which is exactly the kind of comment that critics get whenever they criticize the insubstantiality of superhero movies).

İnsanlar ne diyor?

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film Ghostbusters

The original Ghostbusters lost its purity with Ghostbusters 2, and given that a franchise reboot was monetarily unstoppable, gender-flipping it was actually a novel, inspired, laudably risky idea. But instead of proving the girls can be funny too—which each lead had proved already—all it proves is that they can make painfully mediocre cash-ins, stretched thin on empty riff sessions. But more McKinnon movies, please.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Ghostbusters

In 2016 the bar is low enough that a ho-hum "Ghostbusters" reboot can still be a perfectly acceptable mainstream Hollywood comedy. Our four leads are talented and funny, and are each given a chance to shine, but director Paul Feig is clueless behind the camera: his sloppy framing and candy-colored effects shots mean this film resembles those live-action "Scooby-Doo" movies more than it does Ivan Reitman's original.

  • VENIMOS LOS JODIMOS Y NOS FUIMOS's rating of the film Ghostbusters

  • Huey McEvoy's rating of the film Ghostbusters

So much chatter about something so benign! It's a fun film, I laughed out loud many times, and my kids loved it. Therefore it fulfilled its ambition and serves its purpose, no? Worth watching for Kate McKinnon alone, who sublimely channels the strange, singular comedy of Madeline Kahn in any number of Mel Brooks films.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Ghostbusters

Another episode of comedies without laughs. The so-called reimagining of 'Ghostbusters' despite a game cast and good effects fails to engage and becomes something a summer tentpole should not be...boring. Mind you the '84 original is a pretty creaky vehicle too but at least had some good laughs along the way. Feig is capable of making great comedy ('Spy', 'Bridesmaids') but this is just shy of disaster.

  • Zachary T.'s rating of the film Ghostbusters

Fact: we desperately need more blockbuster films about, by and for women. But, it's been pretty sad watching Sony and the mass-media hijack and profit from the idea that anyone who doesn't go for bland reboots/remakes like this is a misogynist. It's also incredibly condescending to women that so many critics have given this good reviews strictly on the basis of its cast while acknowledging that it is mediocre.

  • Filipe F. Coutinho's rating of the film Ghostbusters

It never finds a way of standing on its own. There are 'okay' moments but it is mostly unfunny, feels unnecessary and, worst, sexist. It could have stood for equality, yet it prefers to do what Hollywood did for decades. "an eye for an eye..."

  • Ethan's rating of the film Ghostbusters

While nothing can compare to the original, this film does a good job of separating from the original and becoming its own great film and at the same time paying some great homages to the source material. All the haters can get fucked, these four ladies did a wonderful job and I hope there are many more to come, because at the end of the day we could use more ghostbusters no matter what equipment they have.
