It's Such a Beautiful Day
Don Hertzfeldt ABD, 2011
Though the stakes are verbal, the gag is visual. While the gag is fulfilled, it’s delivered by switching modes of address. Hertzfeldt spells it out without spelling it out: HOW’S UP! appears onscreen, but the narrator doesn’t say it. The joke wouldn’t work if he simply verbalized the resulting foul-up, but by literally illustrating the line visually, he atomizes his prongs of attack: keeping text, image and sound separate, the director asks us to participate in completing the gag with him.

…An immersive masterpiece of multiframed compositions, blotches of vibrant colour and elliptical editing that calls to mind the greats of Soviet montage… Taken as a whole, it’s an ambitious and provocative blessing that manages to be about everything and anything and always without sounding pretentious.

His first feature, It’s Such a Beautiful Day (2012), is currently in limited release and affirms Hertzfeldt as a true virtuoso, constructing an emotional narrative of existential meditation from swaths of banal occurrences, nightmarish hallucinations and devastatingly funny memories.

Despite all this macabre torment, It’s Such a Beautiful Day involves a lot of sweet, plucky humor that represents a discreet softening of the angry sarcasm for which Hertzfeldt has become known.
