At times DiCaprio's performance as the elderly Hoover feels like a cross between Orson Welles and Jon Voight, but I actually think Leo is quite good here. This feels like less of a personal statement than more recent Eastwood affairs, more like what you'd expect of an awards season biopic from 2011, but as in so many Westerns we watch as the myth an iconic American has built up around themselves slowly unravels.
I give these film three stars because of Leonardo DiCaprio's performance. He went really deep into this character and delivered a heart felt and insightful performance. This is Clint Eastwood trying to be Scorsese.
It's probably eastwood's worst film, together with Invictus and Firefox. The script and direction are just so conventional and boring. After more than two hours of film the only words you can pronounce are: "So What?!!" And let's not forget the make-up, whch is just plain ridiculous.Who would say that after "Gran Torino", old dirty Clint would live to disgrace himself with these last awful three films???
Uneven effort from Clint Eastwood suffers from some major shifts in tone, from dry history lesson to overheated melodrama. But it is a handsomely-made film, fast-paced with a number of compelling moments and grounded by Leonardo DiCaprio's strong central performance. Not among Eastwood's best, but worth watching despite its flaws.
Clint Eastwood's film about the life of J. Edgar Hoover is less a typical biopic as it is a complex portrait of a complex man as told through his own eyes, mixing history with a small man's own inflated image of himself. DiCaprio's performance takes some getting used to, but it's perhaps his finest moment as an actor. Essentially a muffled love story, it's a heartbreaking tale of repressed sexuality.
I'll admit, I have not have seen much Eastwood. I also have not have seen this film for quite sometime. But you know what, I have yet to be convinced that this film is poor. The make-up? Supported by the films play of reality and illusion. Acting? All solid. Script/this never happened? Good script/does not matter. I am growing more confident this is (MASTERPIECE) upper echelon Eastwood. I'll confirm on a re-watch.
The negativity surrounding this film is uncalled for; it has its weaknesses, yes, but Eastwood's direction and DiCaprio's performance more than make up for it. DiCaprio proves again that he's an actor who can handle difficult material, and not the joke he is often made out to be by his detractors. It could have had more, but I loved what was there.
Nowhere near as bad as I was led to believe it to be, but also not the underrated film that I hoped for. Just OK. Honestly, as big a fan as I am of Eastwood, this is a biopic/story that probably would have been better served by someone like Oliver Stone giving it the full-on conspiracy treatment.
