Mary’s story is a gratifying mirror to the ongoing cultural conversation about women, agency and power, but it’s worth noting that whenever Josie talked to me about this film she framed it as almost a gangster movie. . . . It’s refreshing then to see the film not just as a period costumer, but almost a female-driven version of “Heat,” complete with a pivotal scene where our opposing forces discover common ground.

It's possible that, in making a case for an uneasy, ambivalent sisterhood, Rourke presses too heavily on the contemporary relevance pedal. . . . Mary Queen of Scots does make a powerfully moving case for an uneasy dance between two powerful women hamstrung by male politics.

The tamped-down and smoothed-out movie lacks the psychological acuity and the political reflection to develop its ideas.

You probably know how this story ends, but Rourke makes the getting-there suspenseful even so. And both Ronan and Robbie are superb: they have just one scene together, but their characters’ dual isolation and increasing rancor, playing out in twin kingdoms so close to each other and yet so far, becomes a force of its own–a potential kinship that becomes a destructive fireball.
