Memories Of My Body is one of the more thematically focussed films I've seen in a while. Everything in the film comes back to the way our bodies/gender mediate our experience of the world, be it through dance, costume, boxing. Performance art interludes are obvious but are mesmerising. Midsection is intensely homoerotic. Fabric fetishization, stolen kisses, sweat on muscular torsos... Oh boy. Queer fever dream.
I know that director Garin Nugroho put a lot of symbolics or metaphors in his latest movie. I didn't want to be busy to find what's the meaning of each scene. Because in my opinion, KUCUMBU TUBUH INDAHKU is an experience. It isn't just a "movie". The story of its main character is interesting to follow. Mr. Nugroho succeed to mix some themes like culture, sexuality, and politics very well. The cinematography is great
Venice at Home Vol.14: A boy who've learned to dance Lengger, a traditional dancing in Indonesia, floats between masculinity like vehement violence and femininity like elegantly airy dancing, diving into an arcane abyss of sex. Dir. Nugroho represents Lengger's smooth & erotic movement as exquisiteness of physicality with help of Rianto, who is a famous Indonecian dancer & an origin of this biography. Impressive.
