Nocturama Yönetmen Bertrand Bonello
A supremely cool-headed treatment of a highly combustible subject, Bertrand Bonello’s Nocturama is a tour de force of paradox: a film that seems in some ways ripped from the headlines and in others stubbornly detached from the contemporary moment. Its audacity is inseparable from its insistence on abstraction, its willingness to turn what is commonly deemed “unthinkable” into an open-ended thought experiment.

Nocturama is, however crass this may sound, a dazzling film about contemporary youth and terrorism. It’s the type of film that inevitably inspires walkouts due to the fanciful treatment of its harrowing subject matter. It’s a film with both stylistic and thematic precedents: Bonello cribs from a litany of other directors, from Alan Clarke and Jacque Rivette to John Carpenter and George Romero, yet Nocturama is a film like no other, steeped in influence while brewing its own concoction.

One can see why Nocturama was accused by some critics of trafficking in dilettantish provocation—by conventional standards of exposition and characterization, it is deliberately opaque and packed full of hyper-stylized, self-aware flourishes. Yet such charges are rendered moot by Bonello’s incisive, non-didactic observance of the myriad, often unspoken ways that class, sex, race, and gender inform the group’s dynamics; and by the sheer emotional force of the conclusion.

  • josé neves's rating of the film Nocturama

PC. As usual in Bonello, dry and direct formalism is what distinguishes him most from his peers, but the moral valence of a discourse "on today's young people", finding in mercantilism the reason for a lack of ideology can be too patronizing and arguable: is it because of hip-hop and weed? Brilliant use of an empty commercial space, where progressively the rebels undress to wear the symbols of all and nothing.

  • The Macho King's rating of the film Nocturama

2 star film, but you could give it a extra star for some of the camera work thats in here. The film started out really great, than proceeded to divulge into boredom, unease and directionlessness, it's like it has yet to figure out what movie it wants to be. I'm pretty disappointed, due to the fact how truly impressed i was by Bonello's House of Tolerance (Which is one of the best 20 or so films of the last 10 years).

  • Rafael Zen's rating of the film Nocturama

This one does not make it for me. It was impossible to care about anything - and I kept thinking to myself: wait, there's going to be something amazing because people are talking so much about it. Current? Yes. But so many others showcased urban paranoia much better. It has promising scenes though, but they seemed a bit on the music video side. Bonello has done better.

  • Jason's rating of the film Nocturama

I was held in total thrall for the first half-or-so of NOCTURAMA, certain I was watching a masterpiece. By the end, alas, I was irritable and exasperated. In the department store safe house section I think the film continues to have lots of good ideas, some of which are well-executed, and it's actually in spite of exemplary nuts and bolts movie-making that this thing keeps tripping itself up. Ultimately a real chore.

  • MATTEO BITTANTI's rating of the film Nocturama

Bonello's adaptation of The Consumer Society + The Spirit of Terrorism by Jean Baudrillard features killer homages to, among others, George A. Romero (Dawn of the Dead) + John Carpenter (various films) + Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas + Alan Clarke and a dash of Leo Carax. INSTANT CULT. A MASTERPIECE OF PREMEDIATION. TERRORIST CHIC. 21st Century Breakfast Club. Update: two weeks after viewing, star added. Haven't been able to stop thinking about it.

  • Kamran's rating of the film Nocturama

A labyrinthian fever dream where music, persona, and gunshot each play a role in the collective hallucination. Modern Caraxian. 87/100 - Excellent. (4.5)

  • msmichel's rating of the film Nocturama

The first third of the film in which we see a group of young extremists pull off a series of terror attacks across Paris is fascinating in the intrinsic way its presented. Unfortunately once the protagonists all arrive at their planned hideout the film really has nowhere to go before its eventual bloodletting. A rare miss from Bonello.
