Like any great film, it is a story told with constructed, formal images that are layered with meaning. They reflect the characters, their struggles, offerings, failures, and victories. Mirrors are everywhere.
Surprise!! It's not a boxing movie. Well, there is boxing involved, but this film was definitely more than I expected. I won't ruin the film for the five people who still haven't seen it yet (no offense, I was #6 until this morning), but the final words of the film are words that I would usually hate to hear as film-enders. But by God they were the perfect ending to this film.
Dignified American cinema. An ode to the common man, the underdog, whose greatness comes not from intellect or prosperity, but through perseverance, the willingness to take risks, the strength to “go the distance.” A classic, and rightfully so; one of the rare instances where populist entertainment is legitimately soulful and inspirational.
The original and best - it influenced an entire genre of sport films. Pretty realistic compared to the other films and most of other sport films too. It has lost some of its "punches" (pun intended!) due to it's many boxing film rivals, sequels and other imitations and parodies, but it is hard not to say this film still shines today.
