It’s not hard to imagine that there will be some young girls who will find strength and pleasure in Skate Kitchen, which is reason enough for it to exist. Even so, that doesn’t negate the fact that it’s a shoddily made, cliché-ridden film that is well beneath those same girls, who are likely to get excited about the film in the absence of something better.

Cinematographer Shabier Kirchner's lambent images capture the grunge and romance of a steamy urban summer, and Aska Matsumiya's score is redolent of hope.

Vinberg is a wonderfully poised and thoughtful actor, and the entire cast holds the screen with spontaneous and focussed energy, but Moselle locks them into her sprawling story with short scenes that advance it as if on index cards. The depiction of Camille’s quest for freedom and identity feels narrow and constrained.

It's been compared to Larry Clark's "Kids," . . . but it's a much less dire and alarmist film. Moselle seems to genuinely like every person who spends more than a minute in front of her lens, and the film takes liberating joy in the sight of young women zipping through traffic on their boards, executing flips, tending to injuries, bantering, and hanging on the backs of buses.

Many of its moments perfectly capture the delight and dread of a summer in the city at an age when you may think you’re invincible, in spite of all the everyday defeats life may be handing you.

Although the film is not particularly resonant outside of its own myopic storytelling, it does beautifully observe this subculture with both raw and lyrical detail. From candy colored backdrops to the style minutiae of the different girls, Moselle clearly has an eye for the millennial appeal of their casual aesthetic.

There are no surprises here, and at 107 minutes the entirely standard-issue nature of the rise and fall of putatively dramatic confrontations eventually snuffs out the pleasure of the on-screen company in favor of a dreary march through events.
