Eastwood’s man-at-work tale is one of the most terse and convincing of his late late works.

Regrettable as Clint Eastwood’s recent “pussy generation” comments were, they have the same relevance to his movies that George W. Bush’s watercolors have to his presidency. The fact remains that his body of work as a director, Sully included, represents one of the most searching examinations of our democratic values in the American cinema… Deftly managing taut spectacle, procedural detail, and deep feeling, this is the rare picture that threatens to give Oscar-bait a good name.

Call me biased, but now nearly every mainstream movie I see seems indebted to storytelling strategies consolidated in the 1940s. Take Sully. In less than 90 minutes, it runs through a wide range of narrative techniques. The fact that we take them so completely for granted, and understand them so swiftly, indicates the stability of what we call a Hollywood movie. It’s kind of miraculous that filmmakers continue to find ingenious ways to fulfill norms that were locked into place seventy years ago.

  • dionysus67's rating of the film Sully

One has to separate the pragmatic professional ethic (correctly pointed out by another reviewer) from the dispatching way with which Eastwood delivers this patriotic film. Hagiographical, with countless stereotypes (Linney's housewife, Eckhart's faithful subordinate, the iron bureaucrats who get to see 'truth'), it is, ironically, Hollywood at its most simulated, lacking authorship even by Eastwood's own criteria.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Sully

"Can we get serious now?" Clint Eastwood's ode to professional pragmatism. The unconventional structure works wonderfully here (another way to subvert biopic cliches), and I'm not sure if I've ever enjoyed Tom Hanks more onscreen. What came as a surprise—but in hindsight shouldn't have—is that, in so many ways, "Sully" is really a film about 9/11. Here that collective horror is transfigured into collective hope.

  • HenriqueA's rating of the film Sully

I am not a fan of Eastwood's directorial style and I can only endure a certain quota of unsubtle American patriotism. That said, the film was mercifully short, Tom Hanks was great, the procedural aspect was very thin on melodramatic bullshit and the repetition of the accident was actually a great immersing experience. Sully is a solid and highly rewatchable film and I say that about almost none of Eastwood's work.

  • Huey McEvoy's rating of the film Sully

Eastwood is the Carl Fredricksen of directing: railing against the pussies and snowflakes of a bureaucratic system designed to keep hard workin' men from just doin' their jobs - to the point of simply *inventing* some antagonism for the sake of a good drama. The reconstruction of the event itself is magnificent, while Aaron Eckhart is the very definition of a supportive actor.

  • Zachary T.'s rating of the film Sully

A stately, straightforward, fastidious homage with a captivating and subtle turn from Hanks -- the somewhat predictable denouement is a tad overlong, and the crash sequence is revisited too often, but otherwise, this is solid late-game Eastwood.

  • Michael H. CLAES's rating of the film Sully

A heroic feat mixed with a good disaster-movie. Cleverly edited, alternating action & bureaucracy. Between these two philosophies EASTWOOD's choice is made & justified by a solid defense. === Un exploit héroïque mélangé à un bon film catastrophe. Montage ingénieux alternant l'action & la bureaucratie. Entre ces deux philosophies, le choix d'EASTWOOD est fait & justifié par une solide défense.

  • Zac Weber's rating of the film Sully

It's always tricky keeping the audience's attention in these films based on real events when we already know how the story ends, but I appreciated Eastwood's attempt to dig at Sully's inner thoughts. I was less enthusiastic about the editing and piecemeal reconstruction of the landing. The most thrilling part of the actual landing is the suspense that unfolds in the air traffic control room.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Sully

Eastwood's films continue to ruminate on the American ideal of heroism and its trappings and effects with this exceptionally well told tale. It shows the power of the director and star Tom Hanks that a tale we all know from fairly recent history as such power to enthrall and entertain In terms of production the artisans involved excel but this film depended on performance and Hanks gives an exceptional turn here.
