Shallow and raw. Through professional skill and an element of mystery it keeps one's attention, but it's often tawdry peppered with brutal incident spelt-out in capitals in case you miss it. Though not uncommon, and far from the worst example - so perhaps an undue target - one wonders if such open wounds add much to the world. One certainly isn't asking for Hallmark, but this is still lower down a different barrel.
though the next two installments dropped to a much lower level, this is a definitive masterpiece. noomi rapace is superb, with subtlety and attitude in abundance. the plot itself is magnificent with it's twists and turns, and the dark centre of the film a real delight to unravel. visually stunning, acted perfectly and the soundtrack is also very impressive. this is a modern classic.
The more I think about it, the less enthralled I am with this film. Lisbeth is indeed the best aspect of this film (and I presume the series, which I have not read) because without her around to engage the viewer, this is a silly thriller. The film as a whole is terribly imbalanced and the storytelling is disjointed. Nothing about it impels me to go see the rest of the trilogy.
decent film, good cast but lacks the depth of the novel. if you didn't read the books before seeing the films, youre out of luck there bub. youve completely missed out on some of the best crime novels in a very long time.
a gripping, brutal piece of work that's bound to be remembered. I was on the edge of my seat quite literally for much of the film and have not been in awe of a contemporary suspense film as much as this for quite some time. it holds some power that its sequel (which though a good film) lacks
Highly entertaining film about the search for a serial killer haunting the Swedish country. The supporting roles are interesting and, for once in this kind of production, the amateur detectives are educated. They know how to use the internet AND they also consult with books and newspapers (you know, the strange things made out of paper) in order to find clues. A DVD zone Europe only.
Underwhelming film adaptation of Stieg Larsson's phenomenally popular (and also pretty underwhelming) novel. Strong performances can't make up for underdeveloped characters in an overly-compressed plot that, for all its graphic sex and violence, is ultimately a pretty routine whodunit. Reasonably entertaining, but it's hard to see how this became the phenomena it has.
