Eleştirmen yorumları

The Howling is a very 80s spin on the Universal monster movies, complete with righteously seething, misandrist subtext, but its love of the movie monsters (and the pop culture marginalia all over the script) that shaped our nightmares and fed our morality is timeless.

Joe Dante’s The Howling, which beat the Landis film [An American Werewolf in London] into theaters by a few months, is a lot more conspicuously attuned to, and critical of, the genre’s undertones of sexual violence. From the very first scene, The Howling plays around with the notion of vulnerability as a role-playing exercise, a pseudo-sex game.

Dante's 'The Howling' adaptation improved on the pulp novel and its groundbreaking effects mostly stand the test of time (even if it was eclipsed the same year by 'An American Werewolf in London') save a couple of animated inserts. The plotting that worked in new age cults and media ethics however is much more dated. Of course part of the fun watching an early Dante film is spotting the homages and cameos.

  • Nicholas Gregory's rating of the film Çiglik

An American Werewolf in London is more juvenile, if richer in its blend of comedy with horror, but the reason that The Howling isn't as memorable is because the comedy lightens and overshadows its maturity and analysis of sexual violence, with lycanthropy a metaphor for unchecked sexual aggression and Wallace a victim of its trauma. This aspect is also not fully resolved with a focus on action-horror in its climax.

  • Ethan's rating of the film Çiglik

One of the best werewolf movies ever made, up there with An American Werewolf in London, with a lot of tongue in cheek humor and gore mixed in for a good time.

  • House 0f Leaves's rating of the film Çiglik

An effective horror film and social satire. One of the best of the genre, alongside American Werewolf, and with that film contains the best transformation sequences ever captured on film.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Çiglik

As the film opened, the lush strings from Pino Donaggio and the lurid backdrop of L.A. sex shops immediately put me in mind of Brian DePalma's work from this era. Before long, the action moves to a secluded upstate property called the Colony, where Joe Dante goes about establishing his filmic identity: madcap, anarchic, and equally as inspired by animation as live action cinema. The beginnings of a great formalist.

  • Stefan Drees's rating of the film Çiglik

During the first 20 minutes there’s a deeply unsettling depiction of the urban environment, emphasized through lights, shots und cuts, but also through refraction by media. But this sinister atmosphere is lost after turning to the countryside, when the film gets a bit childish in its werewolf celebration. Only in the end, when the bitter irony shows up, there is a return to the sinister element.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Çiglik

A fun ride while it lasts. Sure there are parts that are a bit silly, but there are a few effective scenes along the way to make up for the movie's short comings. The acting is OK and the effects are cool. I can't help but to feel that the bit with Eddie The Mangler was a bit wasted in favour of The Colony thing. It would have been interesting to see a serial killer/werewolf instead.

There's really not much here. The plot meanders about as you keep waiting for the werewolves. When you do finally see them it's incredibly cheesy. 'American Werewolf' was a far superior film. Better actors, funnier scenes, realistic (for the time) werewolf transformations.
