Walk Hard is a funny, wide-ranging, era-spanning comedy with the joke-a-second ethos expected of a spoof, but it’s as conceptually rigorous as Airplane! orYoung Frankenstein, and that’s what holds it together.
It'd be one thing if "Walk Hard" was just a dead-accurate send-up of the musical biopic, one that should rightfully shame any filmmaker who has cranked out a lazy and by-the-numbers biopic since its release. But the fact that it contains several genuinely great songs, all of which perfectly replicate the distinct musical sensibilities of their era, sends this over the top as one of the best comedies of the 00's.
While I realize it's a silly comedy, WALK HARD pretty much hits on everything that's absurd and stupid about musician biopics, knocking on all the dramatic cliches that go into it. That, and the music is pretty great too.
Silly and hilariously goofy. It's a guilty pleasure but worth checking out for the plethora of cameos, gags, and laugh out loud moments. It drags on, is prepubescent, and gets annoying, but that's also it's charm. It seems like everyone involved is having a blast. John C. Reilly is killer and deserves a lot of credit for keeping this from falling apart.
Despite the incredibly poor taste of making comic hay out of Johnny Cash's brother's tragic, way-too-early, and doubtless traumatic death, this is an often hilarious mock riff on biopics and the music industry in general,...Cash rules everything around him (Spin magazine),
the only time I really laughed was when Ghostface Killah appeared singing... and the scene I really enjoyed was when Dewey was talking with the spirits, close to the end. it has some great music too. but it's not that good.
