Soviet "eastern" (a counterpart to American western); the in-between state of the Civil war captured in the dreamy landscape of Central Asian desert. Everything seem to be suspended like in a dream: time, space.. the main character does not reach anywhere despite being constantly on move; mirage might be a keyword for this film
Visually adventurous war adventure set in a barren desert landscape with castles and oil reserves making for a surreal backdrop to the rudimentary plot, yet one that thanks to the excellent cinematography (there are some stunning high angle shots), the scant but colorful reminiscences of a loving relationship and the Leone-type fight scenes makes this a curious amalgam of poetic violence and mythical modernism.
Russian answer to the spaghetti western is an old fashioned adventure story with hints of nationalism agenda buried within. Anatoli Kuznetsov plays the hero here with full russian vigor. Quite entertaining with enough action to keep one entertained. Well paced and directed.
