Synopsis

Once upon a time, a boy was raised in a garage where everyone enjoyed singing. He is fascinated by every kind of show, and soon buys a camera. Meanwhile, footage of the aging director Jacques Demy unveils intimate reflections on his life’s journey and his love for cinema and musicals.

Our take

Agnès Varda’s fascinating, formally bold portrait-tribute to her partner of 32 years, Jacques Demy, recounts his influences and inspirations, his beginnings as an artist, and constructs its own (extra-marital) intertextual relationship between Varda and Demy’s two singular styles of filmmaking.
