With its languid cinematography, Julia Loktev’s mesmerizing second feature takes us on a zig-zagging journey with a couple—played by Gael García Bernal and Hani Furstenberg—who have to suddenly confront the limits of what defines human relationships. What is left unsaid can be far more powerful.

Although shot on nostalgic 16mm, this throwback to the endearingly naive, occasionally disturbing kids’ films of yesteryear slyly updates the adventure movie for the screen-obsessed generation. In this charming feature, fairy tales, witches, and spells still exist—for those who want to see them.
