“I know that some people are tempted [to improvise], especially in humorous plays and comedies. It is dangerous, because one thinks that one is rounding out one’s character and only succeeds in slacking off and overacting so that the audience laughs more. That way the work becomes dull. The actor is too sensitive to the audience’s reaction.”
