“When I’m directing most movies, I have to be careful not to upstage the writing with the set or locations because, as a director, you don’t want the audience to be going “Oh, look at that.” You want them to be watching the movie. But what I found very soon with Shakespeare, is that you can’t upstage the bugger, he’s so clever with his writing and his themes that I could go mad with what I showed and he would always trump me, he would always be better than anything I could put on screen.”
