Duhamel had a remarkable ability to switch almost seamlessly from one idiom to another – jazz to vaudeville; classical to pop – and while his film music was, he admitted, influenced by the tenets of serialism, it could be lush, romantic and emotional, drawing the audience into the action on the silver screen.
