This movie achieves the impossible in exactly one way: proving you can travesty the already-moribund format of the jukebox musical.

It’s not quite a paint-by-numbers biopic—it’s has too much fun with the recording and performance scenes to deserve that label—but it’s not particularly imaginative, and the fact that it’s PG-13 is only part of the problem.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” plods, explains, obscures, speculates and flattens. It does not mesmerize.

Was sagen Andere darüber?

  • Gia de Almeida's rating of the film Bohemian Rhapsody

If it weren't for Malek's (and Gwilym Lee's!) impressive performance this would have been tv film material. The whole thing is a cliché from top to bottom. It focuses mainly on the rockstar side, the glitz and the glam and none of what's behind it. It tries some deep, moving moments without any real depth to back them up and by the time you're they're done Mercury is a soulless character.

  • Ghostman's rating of the film Bohemian Rhapsody

In many ways, this is a movie of two halves. One being a competent, if terribly cliched, biopic of the band Queen directed by Dexter Fletcher & the other being a homophobic & stereotypical, PG-rated depiction of Mercury's life directed by the awful Bryan Singer. Through it all, making all of the above watchable even when it flounders miserably, is Rami Malek's charismatic performance. He is a truly magnetic actor.

  • Wee Hunk's rating of the film Bohemian Rhapsody

I love Queen, but I knew this wasn't going to be any good. Saw it on the plane. I like Rami, but this was not an Oscar performance. He had trouble with his teeth! The whole thing is full of mythologizing, and structured like a sports picture. The road to the 'greatest' concert of all time. "We did it guys! We are the Champions!" And the rapturous look of the fans at Live Aid... Bohemian Crapsody.

  • Huey McEvoy's rating of the film Bohemian Rhapsody

Critics hate it. Audiences love it. Both points of view are perfectly understandable. Malek truly holds the film together (with props to Gwilym Lee, who nails Brian May), but it's a truly vainglorious mess - and more work should have gone into perfecting the lip-syncing, which for me just gave the live performances a karaoke effect.

  • HenriqueA's rating of the film Bohemian Rhapsody

It's very good when the music is playing, but even then, it's pretty terrible compared to the originals. It's like Brian May's and Roger Taylor's and John Deacon's personal assistants scrambled together a script about what their bosses have been rambling about for the last 30 years during breakfast and then they called their shared gardener to direct it. Fuck this!

  • Jérémy Poirier's rating of the film Bohemian Rhapsody

Rami Malek definitely nails Freddie Mercury's physicality and presence but sadly feels so odd in some scenes. Plus, the pacing is way too slow and the narrative is kind of predictable and goes into too much cliché biopic moments. That being said, the ending performance is really well made and closes the film in a brilliant way. Perfect example of McKee's expression "wow them in the end and you've got a hit".

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film Bohemian Rhapsody

So artlessly scripted, especially when it tries to be artful, that it seems determined to be as generic as possible—this is rock stardom Disneyfied. To the extent that it's "for the fans", it's to try and improve on concert footage by juicing it with Hollywood production values. So if it's just bland hagiography of something everyone already likes, what's the harm? Then again, what's the point?

  • Kamran's rating of the film Bohemian Rhapsody

Rami Malek is brilliant in this role which does best to celebrate rather than superficially iconocise Freddy Mercury's life--which is oft the case with these kinds of films. 78/100 - Very Good. (3.5)
