Watching Harlin’s Exorcist: The Beginning back to back with Schrader’s Dominion: A Prequel to The Exorcist is . . . as Kehr has remarked, a lesson in auteur theory. The characters are the same, but some of the actors are different. The sets are the same, but different people die. The story is nearly the same, but in Schrader’s film fewer things happen than in Harlin’s film, where things happen but then don’t matter.
