Disappointing follow-up to a relatively fun first entry. Elton John was good for a giggle, and some of the more violent moments were so absurd you couldn't help but smirk, but overall it was a disaster of a film riddled with poor decisions and missed opportunities. Played out like all the jokes from the first film crossed with Vin Diesel's XXX.
As much as any film I can think of, this feels emblematic of the "more is more" style of Hollywood filmmaking we've seen the last few years, with a runtime that doesn't know when to quit, a string of A-list celebrities absolutely wasted in glorified cameos, and a wall-to-wall, nostalgia-obsessed soundtrack. The opening action setpiece is one of the best of 2017, but even that resembles a pre-viz sequence at times.
Vaughn amps up all the elements that made the first entry successful and the result is lesser in all ways. The first entry's playful nature had some rewards but the spirit of fun is missing here. It may check off all the action boxes but somehow still lies flat neither being exciting or for that matter interesting.
This is a solid action film and an enjoyable ride with an ensemble cast that will leave you screaming like a schoolgirl from all the badassery that is on the screen. A fitting sequel to a badass film and a franchise I would definitely like to see more of.
Kingsman 2 is a messy but clever satire on the war on drugs& 'merica. I'm surprised this has been called right-wing, it is anything but. It may not seem overtly a satire at times, but it is one; Verhoeven style but it isn't w/out its deficiencies. Characters come& go, scenes feel clipped, and the story is rushed. Vaughn said in an interview that his rough cut was 4 hours long, I'm intrigued by what he left out
Entertaining? Absolutely. However, it loses at least a star for Murdoch's relentless product placement (The Sun newspaper, Fox News) and not-so-subtle Trump apologetics littered into the subtext. The appropriation of the working classes for Conservative agendas is pernicious at best. As for the spectating experience, silly fun, nothing more, nothing less.
Matthew Vaughn must really love the 60s. Example: kitsch period look of Poppy's private ranch in Cambodia (haha?) overwhelms Julianne Moore's subtly neurotic performance as villain. But this is the smallest sin in a movie guilty of cartoon violence and disgusting sexual innuendos. Glib political satire tries to accord KINGSMAN a false sense of cleverness. The real scene-stealer is not Elton John but Bruce Greenwood.
