If you’re going to make a film that is essentially a narrative colouring-in exercise, you might as well make it zippy and fun – and that’s precisely what director Ron Howard delivers.

There’s a great deal of “Star Wars”-related information available in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” but it’s sent in a very-low-bandwidth way that takes two hours and fifteen minutes to transmit. It’s like watching a live-action dramatization of a download progress bar, with actors carrying bits of information from one side of the screen to the other. In this way, too, the movie is a forced march in which the “Star Wars” cinematic empire strikes back.

The hard truth about this just-OK Star Wars universe plug-in is that Howard simply may not be the best director of special-effects-heavy space operas. But that’s a dubious badge of distinction anyway. He has better luck with actors, and just about everyone does good work here.

Was sagen Andere darüber?

  • chanandre's rating of the film Solo: A Star Wars Story

[IMAX 3D] (À-vã-première: agora às Quartas). Hun Solo+Dark Side Daenerys. Ya came full Circle Ronny and this might just be your snowy peak, cum and all. The story is mature and layered. Funny and sharp. Witty and broad. Features the most beautiful explosion (Bay beware!) of the century, bar none. Glover and Harrelson (can we give this man an Oscar already?!) Ehrenreich and Clarke are all peaking hard acting-wise.

  • Z's rating of the film Solo: A Star Wars Story

Dead on arrival. An ugly, lifeless, soulless, void. This is a marketing campaign, not a movie. This crap has no reason to exist other than to fill Disney's already weighty coffers. Ehrenreich is a disaster in the role, utterly lacking Ford's charisma and dash. The musical callbacks to Empire only highlight how timid and artistically compromised this corporate product is. They somehow manage to make Star Wars boring.

  • T. J. Mesen's rating of the film Solo: A Star Wars Story

The diegetic use of the Imperial March is such a huge thing for the franchise. I found myself coming up with behind the scenes situations for the other movies. Like a couple a stormtroopers struggling because they have to repair broken speakers in the hanger bay where the Emperor is due to arrive. It'll be a great episode for the much needed faux reality show of a stormtrooper's life in the Death Star.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Solo: A Star Wars Story

I grew up at exactly the right moment such that, even more than the Special Editions and the hype surrounding Episode I, it was the cross-media experiment of "Shadows of the Empire" (novel, toys, video game, etc. but no movie) that helped fuel my Star Wars fandom. I say this because "Solo" is the first Star Wars movie that feels like one of those Expanded Universe books come to life, and I dug the hell out of it.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Solo: A Star Wars Story

Nice to see a new SW movie that plays it fast and loose and does not hold back on the fun stuff oppossed to the more serious new movies. The cast is charming as hell and while the plotting is formulaic and offers few surprises Howard keeps things moving at a brisk pace making us forget the movie's shortcomings. The best bit was the droid L3 who had the most interesting arc and the coolest lines.

  • Zac Weber's rating of the film Solo: A Star Wars Story

While I'm not sure there was a need to explore the rogue bar guy looking to make a quick buck, this actually ended up being a pretty fun Star Wars spinoff. The funky lounge scene where we first meet Dryden feels referential but fresh and interesting. I was somewhat confused by the production efforts involved in the long, snowy train sequence given the lack of payoff. All said, I'll probably never watch this again.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Solo: A Star Wars Story

A couple of great action set pieces don't compensate for the formulaic plotting and underwhelming casting. When Chewbacca gives the most humanistic performance...you might have a problem. The train sequence and vortex sequence are both quite impressive but the Disney machine need to focus more on story quality than quantity of release dates.

  • Ethan's rating of the film Solo: A Star Wars Story

This was a really fun and exciting picture the whole way through. Alden Ehrenreich delivers a knockout performance and perfectly captures the essence of everyone's favorite smuggler. Even though the concept feels contrived and shitty, the film is far from that. Ron Howard delivers a delightful film that should satisfy all fans because this is good old fashioned adventure. Here's hoping we get an equally good sequel.
