Beautiful film, tells it's story in a simple, natural way... It actually reveals just one day of a family reunion, plus a short epilogue, which is a very nice touch in my opinion. The characters are deep and feel very realistic. It's a story about family life, a conflicting nature of human relationships and life generally...
Excellent piece of film-making. Muti-layered, deep, thoroughly convincing characters. Each scene is beautifully crafted, short, yet incisive and profound. This film contains so much, yet communicates it with such control and economy.
This is a film shot in the classical Shomin-geki style which evokes the films of Ozu. So much is communicated through nuance that, at times, reflects the somber realities of life. During all of this, moments of sheer magic occur reminding the viewer that reality can also have it's moments of charming catharsis.
one of those master films that replaces a mans testicles with ovaries
very poetic and a great tribute to the universal idea of family ... to which we all can relate (no matter what culture you are from)
A serene film free of (melo)dramatic accents in line with the duty to remember respectfully and the Japanese etiquette of self-control. The film touches on a variety of themes: belated action and the guilt children feel towards elderly parents, the contingency of fatality, the dignity of companionship, the penetration of Western culture in Japan. Cinematically, though, the metonymies of walking dissipate quickly.
