It’s hard to think of any remake that two thirds of the way through felt more fresh and original than the errrr... original. Argento's vision will always have a place in my bloody heart but this has found its way into my twisted contorted mind and will stay for a long time. Dakota Johnson is mesmerising and ultimately makes Natalie Portmans Black Swan look like a beige turkey.
4.5/5 - How the director of Call Me By Your Name managed to pull this one off is absolutely beyond me. This is a staggering and disturbing piece of work, which feels almost ritualistic in its entire nature. It's one of my favorites of the year, hands down!
This is an incredibly haunting film that uses everything to make this film feel as creepy and sinister as possible. The music and sound effects are effectively chilling and the special effects are raw and unsettling. Everyone in this film is great except for the psychologist being slightly annoying but this is definitely a masterpiece that will stay with you long after viewing it. Erotically chilling.
schizo and it's good at it. Jungian and it touches on the psyche. certainly richer than the 77's Suspiria, yet the bold and inconsistent formal experimentation might alienate most viewers. I don't love Suspiria either but I love that it exists. Guadagnino is an auteur and this is one of the most intriguing films of 2018.
It's all there in the original, the plot unearthed here. I read it as an extended commentary on the historical nature of heady giallo horror aesthetics, pushing past fan-fic territory quickly with the theme of History Repeating Itself. Another theme: feminism as contingency (very rare theme, even in these "feminist" times). As Susie says: Why do they think that the worst of it is over? Swinton's best perf?
