The Moderns

Regie Alan Rudolph
USA, 1988
Komödie, Drama, Liebesfilm

Darum geht's

In this fanciful history of the expatriate-littered Paris of the 1920s, painter Nick Hart mingles with Ernest Hemingway and other leading lights of the Lost Generation. His paintings prove unpopular, so he supports himself by caricatures until an offer to engage in forgery becomes to good to refuse.

With a few brilliant anachronisms… Rudolph turns the story’s blend of sexual obsession, artistic passion, outsized celebrity, loose money, and national bravado into a refraction of modern times… Though the gentle satire may play into Hollywood’s own largely anti-intellectual stereotypes, Rudolph thrusts style to the fore: whether his own or Hemingway’s, it comes off as the essence of substance and the stuff that romantic dreams are made of.

For its first hour, at least, The Moderns gives us an Alan Rudolph very nearly back at the top of his form, on a level that approaches that of his two masterpieces, Remember My Name and Choose Me. The effort isn’t sustained — and the movie encounters a number of booby traps, emerging more than a little battle scarred — but it still qualifies as far and away the most ambitious Rudolph movie to date.
