Beautiful, interesting, incredible cinema.
José has almost finished making his sophomore feature when his ex resurfaces and an enticing package—audiotape, Super-8 reel, and apartment key—arrives from an old acquaintance, Pedro. Adrift in drugs, doubt, and the vampiric pull of the past, José chases catharsis through filming and being filmed.
Worming out from the same 1970s counterculture that spawned Pedro Almodóvar (who dubs here!), this lysergically anarchic cult horror is suffused with twisty self-reflexivity. Always down to be controversial, director Iván Zulueta injects personal passions—heroin, cinema—into rough and ready frames.
