When I paint my surreal paintings or design a sci-fi costume or whatever, my subconscious takes over and the ideas just well up even while I’m talking or listening to music. Whereas creating a universe through language demands a more precise imagining process. You become necessarily schizophrenic; you listen to conversations that occur wholly inside your head. So I need a lot more concentration and silence when I write.”
