Synopsis

Over the course of a single day in Tehran, a chain of loosely connected stories follows several women as they move through hospitals, streets, police stations, and private homes. Their paths intersect as they confront restrictions surrounding birth, work, and relationships.

Our take

Jafar Panahi has spent his career documenting the everyday lives—and systemic oppressions—of present-day Iran. Winner of the Golden Lion at Venice, The Circle, is one of his very best: a vital, heartbreaking look at a group of women who the patriarchy has transformed into fugitives.
