Even though I'd long ago given up on Nichols as an interesting filmmaker (despite all his mainstream smarts), his six-hour Angels in America (2004) was obviously something I needed to see, so I ordered the two-DVD set from HBO Video and was more than amply rewarded. Thanks to the material he had to work with—Tony Kushner's polyphonic script and many virtuoso actors, especially Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, and Jeffrey Wright—this is far and away his best film.
