BANG BANG

Andrea Tonacci Brazil, 1971
The thrill of discovery never abandoned Tonacci. His quantitatively small yet stylistically immense legacy includes one of Brazil’s most startling avant-garde films, Bang Bang. . . . Tonacci wove a grotesque, tongue-in-cheek farce that, while retaining some suspense elements, consistently breaks genre conventions, and in effect frustrates audience expectations.

I’ve met two Brazilians in the flesh, and when I asked them what’s their country’s best film, they both said this one, and may be right... It is with the accumulation of apparently unconnected scenes that this experimental-narrative film is a thesis on the limits and tools that cinema has so far.
