With religious overtones that make the film seem like a pulpier companion piece to the likes of Pier Paolo Pasolini's Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom, Martyrs exposes humanity at its very worst—all in the name of oppressive structures of power.

Pascal Laugier’s Martyrs is, in this context, an extreme but thoughtful movie: surely one of the few in the Saw/Hostel cabal that goes all the way to the absolutely logical but usually desperately avoided association of all this body-torture with Nazi medical experiments and death camps.
