A monumental film in Bollywood history... Less a portrait of one family's life than of an entire nation — a point made a bit too clear in one scene where the family farms a large patch of land shaped exactly like India! — this is ultimately a somber story. It begins and ends in reflection, with Mother, representing an entire country, looking back on a life of loss and triumph.
