Kristoffer Borgli Norway, 2022
Curzon
A biting indictment of contemporary absorption, and the sacrifices we make in the name of self-interest, Sick of Myself is bitterly hilarious.

Signe is obviously unlikeable, but that’s what makes her the perfect vehicle for exaggerating the small parts of our brains that are obsessed with ourselves.... Since watching Signe make the most nutty decision possible is hilarious and the film’s tone isn’t too self-serious, Sick of Myself works.

This is a stunning debut by Borgli, whose clever, often blistering screenplay cuts very close to the bone.

The Film Magazine
Sick of Myself provides a sharp caricature of modern millennial values, cutting right to the heart of a culture that offers dangerous motivation for the veneration of victimhood.

Sick of Myself is a beautifully whip-smart black comedy that shines a damning light on society's intensifying self-obsessions.

The film is less about ambition or striving for success, as it’s about the fetishisation of that image of success, and how striving for the perfect image can destroy you.

A strong script from Borgli weaves satire expertly with character study and offers a sharp, considered take on the very present attention economy.

[T]hough more acerbic and uncomfortable than Joachim Trier’s beloved romantic comedy [The Worst Person in the World], Kristoffer Borgli’s scathing portrait of nihilistic narcissism taps into similar deadpan humor but walks a much more precarious tightrope between uncomfortable satire and plain cruelty.

The awfulness might be the point here, but in Sick of Myself it appears so one-note there’s never any threat of deeper meaning or commentary on societal beauty standards and the voracious appetites of social media influencers.

The filmmaker’s tart and scabrously funny (both literally and figuratively) sophomore feature is a pointed portrait of a toxic relationship and a razor-sharp evisceration of those warped by a victim mentality.

A peculiar but riveting dark comedy that uses common romantic tropes in an increasingly bizarre but effective way, Sick of Myself is a remarkable addition to the career of a promising young director.
