THE BUBBLE

Arch Oboler United States, 1966
The New York Times
There's a considerable windup to their attempts to escape. But the grotesque predicament has the earworm appeal of a radio mystery, and there are distant echoes in Stephen King's "Under the Dome" and the playing field of "The Hunger Games." This world's puppet master pointedly goes unseen, meaning that the crystal-clear 3-D effects function more to set a mood of unreality... Like the world it depicts, the film is a well-preserved sample — a rare visitation of old-school sci-fi.

The Bubble," which also has echoes of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," doesn't make much sense, but the often gratuitous 3-D effects, which include a tray of beer bottles that float out from the screen as if on a magic carpet, can be striking — even seen on 3-D TV.
