Questions abound in Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s The Lodge. Answers, insinuations, even a genuine cause for speculation, do not. Not in any real way. Despite the movie’s apparent desire to evince otherwise, these lapses are not what make it a horror movie. They’re what make it a bad horror movie.

The directors have coaxed only a disappointingly timorous horrorscape from that marvelously glacial mood.
