Fusing European gothic with Japanese ghost story, Yamamoto’s first “vampire” movie is an unusual take on the material, refusing the foreign origins of the demonic for a homegrown tale of violence and tragedy consuming the life of a young woman attempting to find happiness in the rapidly changing post-war society.
Never truly a Gothic Horror despite wearing it’s influences, it is an example of how a movie can combine its cultural influences to create its own identity.
