VICE IS BROKE

Eddie Huang United States, 2024
Huang has fun parodying the Vice documentary style with his work here... whenever Huang opens up about his own tendencies to be a loudmouth with a self-sabotaging streak a mile wide, his devotion to this damn company makes more sense. He can be self-aware about his own problems, so why not bring more of that into the wider narrative?

The problem with “Vice is Broke” is it never quite gets around to answering what went wrong with Vice, content to mimic its “quirky” form of filmmaking as interview subjects recall the toxic workplace atmosphere that undeniably produced some formative journalism.

Huang brings his unique aesthetic and voice to the film, and it gives the film an energy that would otherwise be lost by more “serious” filmmakers.

Exclaim!
Vice meant a lot of different things to a lot of different people, and trying to explain exactly what it was and what it stood for depends on who's answering. So perhaps it's not surprising that a film about the company proves similarly muddled.

Vice Is Broke is strongest when it talks honestly about Vice Media’s strengths and weaknesses... Huang doesn’t shy away from Vice‘s sometimes disturbing sexist and racist tendencies—its bro-heavy, “just joking” style of performative outrageousness.

“Vice is Broke” offers a comprehensive and chaotic dive into the rise and fall of Vice Media... The documentary is a captivating exploration of Vice’s tumultuous journey. The film blends sharp insights with candid storytelling that’s so interesting, you’ll definitely want to strap in for the ride.

Huang’s own film reflects the Vice-ification of media, but in a cheeky and thoughtful way... The approach reflects the docu-tainment type of lifestyle television that Vice tried to emulate with a splash of hard news, but Huang shows that one can crib from these styles without cheapening the take.

[Vice is Broke is] the perfect encapsulation of the media empire that it watches crumble into dust... Huang’s refusal to budge from the courage of his convictions makes this deeply personal documentary something even better than that: It’s the movie that Vice deserves.

[Vice is Broke] gets at some of the chaos that defined the company while often finding itself distracted and sidetracked away from some bigger, perhaps more important questions... In a way, that’s a rather fitting encapsulation of Vice itself... This film isn’t the documentary [its employees] deserve, but it’s maybe the one Vice does.
