Synopsis

A century after Italian poet and soldier Gabriele D’Annunzio occupied Fiume (now Rijeka, Croatia), filmmaker Igor Bezinović returns to the city to examine the legacy of his political experiment. Through archival material, interviews, and staged reenactments, residents confront their murky past.

Our take

Demystifying a ludicrous figure, Igor Bezinović’s meta documentary takes an irreverent look at a turbulent moment in European history. Reckoning with the past through imperfectly charming dramatic reconstructions, this joyful and witty work of collective remembrance brims with present-day parallels.
