Synopsis

New England in the 1630s: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life with five children, homesteading on the edge of an impassable wilderness. When their newborn son vanishes and crops fail, the family turns on one another.

Our take

Transfiguring the tired field of 2000s shock-horror with olde, auratic terror, Robert Eggers’s debut feature garnered critical acclaim for taking the genre seriously. Impressing with stunning performances of haunting puritanical fervor, The Witch wrests exquisitely creepy imagery from barest woods.
