Finding breathtaking beauty in places where many a filmmaker would never think to look, Andrea Arnold’s unflinchingly honest cinema exposes the souls of her troubled characters, flaws and all. As her new film Bird (2024) premieres in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, we’ve teamed up with the Directors’ Fortnight—who will present Arnold with the prestigious Carrosse d’Or—to showcase the work of an English director whose raw poetic style puts outsiders in the spotlight.
Arnold first came to prominence with the Oscar®-winning  Wasp (2003), a striking slice-of-life short centered on a young woman determined to care for her four children without giving up on love. A deeply empathetic portrait of people who dare fight for a happiness often denied to them, the film pulses with questions about desire, its cost and its consequences—and these would come to define Arnold’s filmography. Such concerns come to the fore in her powerful social-realist drama Fish Tank (2009), which stars Michael Fassbender as an object of lust for a driven teenage girl, dreaming of a better life.
With Wuthering Heights (2011), Arnold made a brief departure from the urban present via a modern but naturalistic reimagining of a classic. This stormy, impetuous adaptation examines the transformative power of passion on the lives of marginalized people, much like American Honey (2016), which earned her the third Cannes Jury Prize of her career. A sensual and colorful road trip, this freewheeling ode to youth is the most jubilant offering in an invigorating oeuvre full of sound and fury.
