Synopsis

An eight-year-old child struggles with the fact that people keep addressing her in confusing ways. During a summer in the Basque Country among the beehives, she explores her identity alongside the women of her family, who at the same time reflect on their own lives and desires.

Our take

The struggles of identity are mirrored between mother and child in this tender Basque drama, which radiates the heat of the summer sun and shifts with the pliability of beeswax. A revelatory Sofía Otero won Berlinale’s Silver Bear for her turn as a trans child making sense of the world around them.
