Synopsis

Monk is a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment that profits from Black entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, he uses a pen name to write an outlandish book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

Our take

A contender for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars®, Cord Jefferson’s hilarious debut delivers a brilliant mix of satire and family drama. Taking aim at the racial blind spots of the publishing world, American Fiction gleefully exposes the industry’s ravenous appetite for stereotypical storytelling.
